Joseph Harris' Forwarding
Joseph Harris' Forwarding
Personally, I enjoy writing for pleasure a lot more than writing in class, on cue, and really in any academic environment. I like to be creative with my writing and the time constraint that writing assignments require, they don't allow us to fully express ourselves. With this minor aversion to academic writing I have not taken the opportunity to analyze it like Joseph Harris has in his book Rewriting. He explains the concept of forwarding in this book to be to "push (a subject) forward, to say something new, something that seems to call for further talk and writing" (pg 35-36). He developed this idea from the concept of an email. When a recipient wishes to comment on an email, one has two options: to reply or forward the added information. In forwarding, you take what an author has stated and use it to strengthen your own arguments.
This concept is fairly common in blogging, where an author is usually prompted to write because of their response to some event, action, or piece of news. For example, Ralph Nader, a columnist for The Huffington Post recently wrote about his response to the cancellation of the US Postal Service's Saturday delivery service. He vehemently writes about the USPS's Postmaster General Donahoe and his inability to correctly handle the debt of the US postal service. He lashes out at the government's inability to properly fund the service, yet still reap the benefits of the (until recently) profitable department. He fails to mention that this decision is still tentative and that Congress has the final word in this issue. He implies that Congress is inadequately doing their job. After reading the story form the New York Times, and becoming fully informed, I was able to draw my own conclusions, however forwarding can be misleading because of some of the extreme conclusions that are drawn.
